How did Smart Detect come into existence?
Dr. Shohreh Mohebbi, a university professor, discovered a research paper from the University of Toronto highlighting significant pollution in beauty salons, nail spas, and tattoo salons, linked to health issues such as miscarriages and infertility. Intrigued by the findings, she collaborated with her husband, Dr. Behzad Amini, who conducted a survey with 1,000 salon workers in Tehran in 2023, uncovering similar health concerns. This inspired them to seek a technical solution, leading to a partnership with Mr. Seyedsaeed Hosseinpoor Darchini, a computer science specialist and entrepreneur, to design a wearable device capable of monitoring pollutants in salon environments.
The team expanded with the addition of Dr. Victoria Kiavash, an ophthalmologist, who brought expertise in addressing the broader health impacts of pollutants and contributed entrepreneurial and business operations insights. To ensure the project's financial viability, they enlisted Ms. Sarah Mosayebi, a finance expert, who joined as an investor and advisor. Together, the group focused on creating a product to mitigate health risks for workers in salons and other environments with poor air quality.
Through market research and discussions with potential customers in Iran, the team garnered positive feedback and secured preliminary contracts with companies willing to support product development and testing. Encouraged by this response, the team solidified their mission to innovate solutions for monitoring and controlling air quality, aiming to create healthier workplaces globally.
